The Accra Circuit Court Nine, under the authority of Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, has sentenced 32-year-old Geofrey Obuobi to six months in prison with hard labour for the theft of copper cables from a transformer belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Obuobi was charged with three counts: intentionally interfering with the supplier’s distribution system, causing unlawful damage, and theft.

He pleaded guilty to all charges. The stolen copper cables were valued at GH¢ 7,550.

During the proceedings, Detective Inspector Louis Mensah recounted the events of October 16, 2024. A resident of Lartebiokoshie, Seidu Amadu, encountered Obuobi carrying a sack.

Noticing Obuobi’s suspicious behavior, Amadu confronted him, prompting the accused to flee.

Amadu pursued him on his motorbike while alerting others to the situation.

Obuobi was apprehended, and a search of the sack revealed a 240-meter length of copper cable belonging to ECG, along with a plier.

Investigations indicated that Obuobi is an ex-convict who had recently completed a one-year sentence for a similar offense just two weeks prior.

The Electricity Company of Ghana has reported a rise in cable thefts from their transformers, leading to increased public awareness campaigns encouraging the reporting of suspicious activity around their installations.
