Nana Yaw Sarpong, the Sompahene of Nkaseim Traditional Area in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region, has urged the government and Ahafo stakeholders to lease concessions for small-scale mining.

He stated that the measure will help create jobs for the youth in villages whose livelihoods rely on mining.

In March 2017, the government banned small-scale mining in response to the devastation of key water bodies and forest reserves around the country.

Nana Yaw Sarpong urged the government to intervene by releasing portions of grounds allocated to Newmont Ahafo Mines for community mining.

Nana Sarpong stated that he obtained information from the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa, which he is ready to execute completely if the government leases property for small-scale mining

According to him, plans have been put in place to restore mining sites by planting economic trees.

The earthworks and economic tree planting had been finished on a ten-acre degraded plot of land.
