The dusty nature of the Huhunya to Asesewa road in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region has caused a fatal motor accident leading to the death of one person with 14 individuals critically injured.

The victims were taken to the Eastern Regional Hospital, where the injured received medical attention and the deceased was kept in the hospital morgue.

Nene Teye Kwame, the Dademantse of Huhunya told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the accident occurred on Friday when a Hyundai H100 bus with registration number GT 4520-112 headed to Nkurakan collided with a motorcycle.

He claimed that because of low visibility, the driver of the Hyundai bus carrying passengers attempted to pass a minibus in front of him through the dust suspension and collided with the motorcycle carrying two riders.

He claimed that as a result, one of the minibus’s riders died and fourteen others were hurt.

Nene Kwame partially attributed the Huhunya-Asesawa road’s dust accumulation to the contractors’ neglect to irrigate the surface during construction.
He said that for the past 180 days or six months, Maripoma Construction has not been watering the Huhunya section of the road.

“The dust is killing us, and I think the vehicle that was crushed by the motorbike wouldn’t have happened if the road was watered more frequently,” he remarked.

According to a medical professional’s study, breathing in dust can cause serious respiratory conditions. As a result, Nene Kwame added, watering roads can prevent fatalities.

The contractor “comes to get water in our area and then goes to water other areas, leaving us in a dusty state, which is unfortunate,” he said.
According to Nene Kwame, the road’s dusty condition has a negative impact on the vendors that run their stores along it.”Dust keeps us from conducting our regular business near the road, so several shops in our area have closed,” he said.

The Yilo Krobo Municipality’s Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Eric Tetteh, made a request to Maripoma Construction Company to irrigate the Huhunya-Asasewa route in the meantime.

A few days had passed since Generals Construction Limited started building the 11-kilometer Somanya-Kpong road when he made the call.

According to Mr. Tetteh, despite the Contractor’s efforts to irrigate the road, Maripoma Construction mistreated the Huhunya-Asesewa route, resulting in numerous instances of abuse directed against the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly.
Dust will surely fly while constructing a road and bitumen is removed from it; therefore, it’s critical to irrigate the area to prevent damage to nearby homes and businesses.
