Black Stars captain Andre Ayew was a guest lecturer at the University of Ghana psychology class on Friday.

The 34-year-old guest lectured for the two-hour class on numerous topics relating to psychology.

Ayew addressed issues such as joining the Black Stars team as a teenager, being a leader in the team and how he has faced adversity and bounced back during his career as an athlete and human as a whole.

The Ghana international conveyed his delight to be allowed to speak to the students.

“It was a great moment for me to have the opportunity, the honour to be here today…It’s not everyone who has this opportunity,” he said.

“Honestly I loved it. I loved the experience, I loved the way the student’s mentality is. I have seen and I can confirm that a great job has been done in there…For me, it was just great to come and have a moment like this to share my experience, my ups, my downs.

“As for today, it was to give a glimpse of hope of what is being mentally tough and mentally strong.”

Ayew also counselled the kids to resist giving in to peer pressure because striving for success is an inevitable phase of life.

It’s there in everything around you, not just football. Pressure will always arise when there is a lot to do, regardless of what you want to do, Andre added. “But if you want to achieve anything, then you will have to be able to deal with pressure because that is where the real work starts.”

“All this is part of me growing up and part of me becoming the man I wanted to be because after football there is more life to face and other things I, as a person, want to achieve in football.”

Dr. Collins Badu Agyemang, a senior lecturer in psychology and the class facilitator for sports psychology, invited Ayew to Legon.

Thanking the Black Stars forward for coming through to share his experience with his kids, Dr. Agyemang expressed his gratitude.

He believes that the experience that is imparted will greatly influence the following generation.

“I have to admit that it’s a humble experience for me. We have had guest speakers throughout the years, but Andre is the first—an active and elite athlete, of course—so it is not unexpected that he received the ABC Mental Fortitude award, Dr. Agyemang stated.

“He’s made significant contributions to highlighting the applicability of sports psychology. He has made it abundantly evident that athletes face many difficulties, particularly in their formative years, and that they will require assistance in order to develop resilience and change their perspective.

Andre Ayew’s talk about his experiences with the class delighted several of the pupils who stayed for it.

At the conclusion of a two-hour seminar, Ayew received a framed citation and was delighted to be the first recipient of the ABC Mental Fortitude award, which is given in celebration of mental fortitude and overall perseverance.
