The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, cleared the path for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, or NAPO, to be endorsed as his running partner for the December 7 elections. Following discussions, Dr. Opoku Prempeh was accepted by the NPP majority in parliament and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Dr. Bawumia conducted a critical meeting with Dr. Opoku Prempeh and Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, also known as Chairman Wontumi, on Sunday night before introducing his running partner to the National Council of the party. The purpose of the gathering was to settle any disagreements and make plans for the future.

On June 28, 2024, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader, said that the parliamentary caucus wholeheartedly endorses Dr. Bawumia’s selection of NAPO as his running partner. He said that the National Council will probably make this choice very soon after holding lengthy discussions with the party leadership.

“Dr. Bawumia indicated during our conversations with him that he would rather have Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running partner. Mr. Afenyo-Markin said, “The caucus supports this choice, pending the official confirmation at the national council meeting.”

“We have engaged with Dr. Bawumia on this decision, and the caucus members’ feedback has been positive,” he continued. Given the President’s positive response, it appears that a consensus will be reached at the next meeting.

Given these events, it is likely that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh will lead the NPP into the 2024 elections with Dr. Bawumia.
