The Busia family, who are members of the Sofoase Yefere Royal Family of Wenchi, have applied for judicial review at the High Court in Sunyani.

The application, dated July 25, 2024, requests a Mandamus order to force the Bono Regional House of Chiefs’ Judicial Committee to form a panel in order to consider a long-standing chieftaincy case.

On July 24, 2019, a petition was filed contesting Mr. Abrefa Damoah’s appointment as Wenchihene, citing unconstitutionality and violation of the Chieftaincy Act, 2009 (Act 759).

At first, Mr. Damoah was prohibited from serving as Wenchihene by an injunction issued by the Bono Regional House of Chiefs.

The injunction was later overturned by the National House of Chiefs, who also instructed the Bono Regional House of Chiefs to accelerate the substantive case hearing.

The Sofoase Yefere Royal Family has decided to take legal action since the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, led by Dormahene Nana Agyeman Badu II, has not yet assembled a panel to consider the case.

The case has been postponed to October 4, 2024 by the High Court in Sunyani.

The application was submitted by Dr. Obeng Gyan Busia, Abusuapanin of the Sofoase Yefere Royal Family, via Asamoah-Cheremeh Chambers attorney Kwabena Asare Atuah.
