The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has received advice from Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the Asantehene, to work hard and make sure he doesn’t violate the confidence the flagbearer has placed in him.

Some members of the public have characterised Dr. Opoku Prempeh as conceited and unworthy of the position of second-highest office in the nation, which calls for serving with humility. His defenders, however, have rejected that label and instead characterise him as aggressive, which has been mistakenly taken to mean haughtiness.

Speaking at a durbar in Manhyia on Tuesday, when Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, was officially introduced to him as Dr. Bawumia’s running partner for the December 7 election, the Asantehene admonished the outgoing Minister for Energy to serve with humility.
“Let me express this to you openly, even though I have already said it to my son (NAPO) in private. Never allow Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to second-guess his decision to have you as his running partner. Be obedient to him and show humility in serving him. I’m telling you again what I said to you privately. When doing your job, keep a low profile and put in a lot of effort. Keep your head down and follow Dr. Bawumia’s instructions.

“There has been chatter that you are conceited because you were chosen as running mate, but I don’t know you to be conceited because I raised you properly and provided for your needs. Why are you now wearing a haughty tag? I may argue that the accusation of arrogance against you is unfounded, but you should take care not to do anything that would support the people making the accusations against you. We’ll pray for you and believe that God will guide you to the goal in whatever you do.
