The daughter of former president Jerry John Rawlings, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, is a member of parliament for the Klottey Korle Constituency and has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party, to pledge to tolerate no corruption.

Speaking on Saturday, July 27, 2024, in Tamale at the NDC’s campaign kickoff, Dr. Rawlings voiced his worries about the commercialisation of Ghanaian politics.

Dr. Rawlings said, “We have to prove them wrong because our politics have become so monetarily orientated that these people think that everybody can be bought at a price.”

The cornerstones of good governance—transparency, accountability, probity, and integrity—must be maintained, she underlined.

“If we are to project this fourth republic, we [the NDC] must uphold those principles and guard them properly when we come to power.”

“If we are to project this fourth republic of ours, we [the NDC] must uphold those principles and guard them properly when we come to power,” she declared.

The NDC was asked by Dr Rawlings to establish a higher bar.

“What people tolerate from these people, they will not tolerate from us because the people of Ghana hold the NDC to a higher standard.”

She emphasised that the party’s agents should guard the voting boxes and insisted that the campaign launch should be based on “principles that cannot be bought with money.”

“We won’t be bought, but we do need money.” She said, “We have to make sure that on December 7, nobody may approach any of our agents and demand money in exchange for betraying the people of Ghana.

Dr. Rawlings emphasised the need to combat corruption, saying that it is our collective responsibility to spread the positive message of the NDC. President Mahama has pledged on his trip to Ghana to combat corruption, but he cannot accomplish this on his own. We have to work together to complete it.

She asked each and every member to defend the voting booth in the next general elections in order to contribute to the fight against corruption and the defence of the fourth republic.

This conflict is significant. All of us need to be above commercialisation. Refrain from letting the money that people will give you fool you. The additional four months we have won’t change their approach if they couldn’t finish in seven and a half years.

For this reason, Dr. Rawlings urged everyone to support the party in the next elections.

“Let’s turn this nation around and put it on the right track—vote for John Mahama, vote for the NDC, and vote for your NDC parliamentary candidate,” she continued.
