Following a thorough trial on two charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery, the court, presided over by Ms. Eleanor Kakra Banes Botchway, condemned them.

The four, who are between the ages of 25 and 40, received concurrent sentences of 10 and 16 years for crimes one and two.

The complainant, David Liu, is a Chinese national who works as a sales manager for HDS Quarry Company Limited in Shai-Hills, the prosecution’s Inspector Maxwell Ayeh informed the court.

According to Inspector Ayeh, on December 19, 2020, at approximately 19:30, the accused individuals and the four accomplices who are currently at large got together over the phone, planned, and armed themselves with sticks and guns. They also covered their faces with pieces of clothing and met in the bush approximately 500 metres from HDS Quarry.
The court was informed that they broke into the quarry and kidnapped Mr. Brown Amponsah, Ms. Cassandra Amponsah, and Mr. Li Cai, the company’s cashier, chef, and security guard, respectively.

The accused followed the cashier to the sales officer’s office and demanded to know where the money was stored at gunpoint.

The cashier indicated a desk drawer in the office, from which they took out four different cell phones, a USB drive, some sales paperwork, a key to the sales office, and GH₵55,000.00. All of these items were worth at GHS2,715.00. After that, they matched him to the manager’s office.

According to the evidence, the accused also stole GHS110,000.00 from a steel safe in the manager’s office, which they gave the cashier instructions to unlock, before they fled.

The Police Intelligence Department Headquarters in Accra notified us at around 20:00 hours on December 8, 2023, that the suspects connected to the 2020 HDS heist had been captured.
