The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) CEO, Samuel Pyne, has announced that the government has released funds for the abandoned Central Market project to resume.

Contrata, the construction firm, had left the site and terminated staff appointments, leaving only security and top management.

However, he revealed that the project cannot be completed before the 2024 general elections.

”We had a recommencement meeting last week Thursday 18 July 2024 in Kumasi. Since they left about 13 months ago that’s a year and a month, there’s the need for them to re-engage workers. Reengaging them, there’s the need for them to go through medical tests so they have given themselves three weeks that is about 3rd to 4th August, 2024 to conclude the process,’’ he said.

The mayor of Kumasi went on to say that the company will start up again in full force the following month. The main goal will be to finish the areas where the floor concrete construction and store installation weren’t completed. All of the supplies for the stores are currently prepared. Because the Finance Minister has provided them with a comfort letter, an assurance letter, and a guarantee of timely payment, they are reevaluating the items they left on site to make sure they are still appropriate for the project, he explained.

Commencing in May 2019, the €248 million project was anticipated to be completed in 48 months. However, the project has been delayed by 13 months as a result of the government’s debt restructuring program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Affected traders had threatened to vote against the ruling party in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections as part of their protests against the administration.
