After allegedly being shot by a police officer at a checkpoint in Danchira, in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, a driver’s companion is reportedly in severe condition.

The incident happened at a police snap roadblock across from the Danchira police station when Corporal Franklin Forson opened fire on the victim without being provoked.

Arriving at the scene on Saturday evening, Isaac Okyere, the driver of a Kia vehicle registered GE 9643, claimed he was detained at the checkpoint after delivering electrometers to an ECG subcontracted firm in Oblogo, Weija Gbawe Municipality.

He was leaving after responding to enquiries from a Community Police Assistant when Corporal Forson fired an abrupt shot into the truck’s empty bucket.

The driver’s partner was seriously hurt by the assault rifle rounds that entered the cabin; he was sent to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for emergency care.
The devastated driver Okyere is demanding justice for the victim and an impartial investigation.

Senior Danchira Police station personnel have reluctant to comment on official matters, however reports suggest that the event is being investigated as an accident.

The victim’s medical fees have been requested to be covered by the police officer who fired the shot.

In the meantime, the Police Intelligence and Professional Standard Bureau (PIPS) is looking into the situation.
