The Black Volta and the Buipe major market in the Central Gonja area of the Savannah region have been overtaken by rubbish for more than a year.
Tradespeople claim that this has led to local floods and a high typhoid infection incidence.
On the other hand, the Black Volta and market waste are lamented by traders, the majority of whom are fishmongers.
Fishmonger Asana Yakubu expressed his frustration at having to sit in filth while trying to sell and consume meals at the market.
She said that because clients are no longer purchasing from them, the issue is having an impact on market sales.
The Central Gonja District Assembly and the authorities were urged by Madam Yakubu to remove trash from the lakefront and market.
In order to stop floods and other illnesses, Madam Yakubu urged the administration and the Central Gonja District Assembly to remove rubbish from the market and the lakefront.
Speaking to Adom News, Tamimu Nuhu Boagye, the assemblyman for the Buipe electoral region, claimed that despite informing the assembly about the traders’ predicament, it was ineffective.
According to him, the heavy garbage has obstructed the major gutter that connects the market to the Black Volta Lake, resulting in floods during rainy seasons.
The Black Volta, which is barely a two-minute walk from the main market, is where the market’s one and only public restroom—which is run by an individual—is emptied anytime it becomes full, according to Mr. Boagye.
In order to solve the garbage issue, the assemblyman is pleading with the government, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders for assistance.
Additionally, he made a request that bylaws be implemented on the Black Volta and at the market to the Buipe District Assembly.
The DCE for Central Gonja, Salia Kamara, responded to the sanitation problem on the Black Volta by saying he is making a lot of effort to get the debris picked up and that he has written to Savannah Diamond Cement in Buipe to ask for assistance in getting a tipping truck to pick up the trash for disposal.
