Declaring that “it is in the best interest of my party and the country,” US President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from the race for re-election.

Four months before Americans head to the polls, it upends the presidential contest.

After a shaky debate performance against Republican Donald Trump at the end of June, it comes after weeks of strong criticism from other Democrats.
Vice President Kamala Harris received President Biden’s support in the presidential contest after the announcement on Sunday night.

He claimed that serving as President had been the greatest honour of his life in a letter that was shared on social media.

“And although I have always intended to run for reelection, I feel that it would be better for my party and the nation if I stepped down and concentrated only on carrying out my duties as President for the balance of my term,” he said in the statement.

After Biden’s dismal debate performance against Donald Trump in late June, calls for his withdrawal from the campaign started to gain momentum.
